Spring Break Part III

Our last day in the Outer Banks area was lighthouse day! The boys were so excited about seeing a lighthouse. Especially Ty. So excited that they had picked out bright green souvenir t-shirts showing North Carolina's lighthouses the day before and insisted on wearing them.

We drove south on NC-12. A thin two-way highway with the Pamlico Sound on one side and the Atlantic Ocean on the other. I wish I had taken a picture of the road because it was amazing. At times you felt like you could reach out and touch the water, it seemed so close. Along a good portion of the trip there were tractors piling up sand on the Atlantic side of the highway as a natural barrier from the water. I wonder how often they do that and how well it works. It was pretty windy on our drive and the sand seemed to be blowing away at a pretty good rate. Also, the towns there looked really cute...mostly summer beach destinations.

After a brief stop for a bathroom break and for Brad to take a phone call we finally made it to the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse. It was cold, windy, and rainy at times and the lighthouse was closed for walking but it was still fun to see the height and beauty of the lighthouse. I was surprised that you couldn't actually see the ocean from the ground level of the lighthouse; too much natural growth.

After photo opps and viewing the grounds, we headed north along the same road to reach the bridge to cross over to the mainland. It ended up being a little more driving than we thought. On our way back we stopped at Bodie Island Lighthouse as well. Another beautiful black and white Carolina  lighthouse. Then headed for home, only to discover that the main highway was shut down and our detour took us farther south again, only this time on the mainland. All in all it took us about 5 hours of driving to get home rather than the 2 1/2 to 3 that it took us to get there. But well worth it!
